This week’s “Stage” page features an interview with director Robin Armstrong, who helmed Circle Theatre’s current production of Marc Camoletti’s 1962 sex farce Boeing-Boeing. (Don’t know about you, but I can say that title over and over again and giggle each time. Cuz it’s an exquisitely dated, sophisto-Sixties reference! To sex!).
If “air hostesses” running around in revealing nightgowns and sporting flashy engagement rings sounds familiar, that’s because Jerry Lewis, Tony Curtis, and Thelma Ritter starred in a 1965 movie version of Camoletti’s play. In terms of the tone of Circle’s production, director Armstrong said that Blake Edwards’ 1965 The Great Race with Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Natalie Wood was a big influence. Here’s the famous pie fight scene from that film. We’ll presume Circle’s show is less messy.
