This weekend brings the 35th edition of Ballet Concerto’s Summer Dance Concert, and the venerable dance troupe wants to make their annual outdoor recital a special occasion. In that spirit, the only work from the established repertoire is Irish Suite, Webster Dean’s restaging of a piece by Dennis Spaight, a short-lived but beloved choreographer whose name still resonates in the Portland area more than 20 years after his death.
The other two pieces on the bill are world premieres, one of which is by Fort Worth’s own Elise Lavallee, whose Ouroboros premiered at last year’s version of Ballet Concerto’s summer performance. Details are scarce on the nature of the latest work by this fixture of the city’s dance and musical theater scenes, but the same can’t be said for Othello, a setting of Shakespeare’s tragedy by the troupe’s stalwart choreographer Luis Montero that will feature Shea Johnson and Michele Gifford in the lead roles. While you’ll have to pay for table seating, the general admission is free as always.
