“Hollywood” is one of the pieces in American Epics: Thomas Hart Benton and Hollywood at the Amon Carter Museum.

Wed 3 – Mahler’s Sixth Symphony is perhaps his most traditional work, a raw and crushing statement ironically written during one of the happiest periods of the composer’s life. He eschewed his typical song quotes and bird calls for a flawless structure that Mozart or Brahms would have approved of, housing a dark and hysterical apocalypse. This huge 80-minute work will be performed by itself by UNT Symphony Orchestra at 8pm at Winspear Hall, 801 N Texas Blvd, Denton. Tickets are $8-10. Call 940-369-7802.

Thur 4 – For the sixth year in a row, Cuisine for Healing hosts its Dinner Party for Life, a benefit for this charitable organization that features a six-course dinner prepared by local chefs. Scott Kaiser (Cannon Chinese Kitchen), Ben Merritt (Fixture Kitchen & Social Lounge), and Stefon Rishel (Max’s Wine Dive) will be among the chefs whipping up the meal at 6pm at the Fort Worth Club, 306 W 7th St, FW. Tickets are $150. Call 817-921-2377.

Fri 5 – The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth holds its annual screening of Oscar-nominated short films this weekend. The screenings are today thru Sun at 3200 Darnell St, FW. Tickets are $7-9. Call 817-738-9215.

Sat 6 – For all the parents of an age to remember the 3-minute spots on ABC television, Casa Mañana is putting on Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. The songs (mostly by the series’ creator, Bob Dorough) cover math, science, grammar, history, and civics for small children to easily digest. Be reminded why three is a magic number. The show runs Fri thru Feb 21 at 3101 W Lancaster Av, FW. Tickets are $20-35. Call 817-332-2272.

Sun 7 – After she placed second in the 2010 McCammon Voice Competition, mezzo-soprano Kathryn Leemhuis returns to town for a recital with her husband, baritone Paul Scholten. They’ll sing Broadway show tunes as well as music by Rossini, Verdi, and Bizet. Don’t miss the baritone comedy song “I’m Glad I’m Not a Tenor.” The concert is at 2pm at Steinway Hall, 3717 Camp Bowie Blvd, FW. Tickets are $10-30. Call 817-731-0726.

Mon 8 – At a time when Texas (and other states) want to turn away refugees, Compassion International is putting on an exhibit entitled The Compassion Experience, showing the lives of children in Guatemala, Uganda, and other nations where circumstances are bad enough to make people flee. The exhibit runs Fri thru today at Park Springs Bible Church, 5515 Park Springs Blvd, Arlington. Admission is free. Call 800-336-7676.

Tues 9 – The title American Epics: Thomas Hart Benton and Hollywood might raise eyebrows among those who know the painter as a chronicler of the Midwest. However, the Amon Carter Museum’s new exhibit explores the effects of the film industry on the artist who came of age at the same time as movies themselves and was deeply struck by the films he saw. The show runs today thru May 1 at 3501 Camp Bowie Blvd, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-738-1933.
