Damon Gupton conducts FWSO’s tribute to the Oscars this weekend.

Wed 20 – James Koskinas has been an actor, playwright, and filmmaker, but he’s best known for painting portraits heavily influenced by the Expressionist painter Emil Nolde. Tonight, Koskinas will be the subject of Arlington Museum of Art’s Modern Masters lecture, the first of a series of three talks, this one given by local artist Donray. The discussion is at 6:30pm at 201 W Main St, Arlington. Admission is free. Call 817-275-4600.

Thur 21 – Theatre Arlington is returning to its roots with Light Up the Sky, the play that was the troupe’s very first production 43 years ago. Moss Hart’s satire on the foibles of theater people may not be a classic for the ages, but a revival like this can illuminate a troupe’s past far more effectively than any archive can. The show runs thru Jan 31 at 305 W Main St, Arlington. Tickets are $15-20. Call 817-275-7661.

Fri 22 – The exclamation point in the title of Nevermore! might lead you to believe that it’s a musical with a singing raven. It’s not, though we would watch that. Instead, Julian Wiles’ play is a biography of Edgar Allan Poe combined with a dramatization of some of his well-known horror stories. This could be great or a huge mess; it’s up to Runway Theatre which one it is. The show runs today thru Feb 7 at 215 N Dooley St, Grapevine. Tickets are $17-20. Call 817-488-4842.

Sat 23 – Many actors have careers they pursue on the side, but few of them moonlight as symphony conductors. One who does is Damon Gupton, a regular on TV’s The Player with credits like Whiplash and This Is 40 to his name. He’ll take the baton at Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra to lead a tribute to music from Oscar-winning movies through the ages Fri-Sun at Bass Performance Hall, 555 Commerce St, FW. Tickets are $30-85. Call 817-665-6000.

Sun 24 – Created only 18 months ago, Jean-Christophe Maillot’s ballet version of The Taming of the Shrew was his first work in more than 20 years not conceived for Ballets de Monte Carlo, the company that has been his perch. This afternoon, you can see the Bolshoi Ballet’s staging of this Shakespeare adaptation, with music by Shostakovich. The broadcast is at 1pm at various movie theaters; check Calendar for locations. Tickets are $16-18. Call 818-761-6100.

Mon 25 – The 120th annual Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo heads into its second week today with storytelling from the Texas Cowboy Poets Association and a timed roping challenge. The show runs thru Feb 6 at Will Rogers Memorial Center, 3401 W Lancaster Av, FW. Grounds admission is free-$10. Call 817-877-2400.

Tues 26 – With the opening of Alice in Wonderland Jr. this week, that makes three plays that Artisan Center Theatre is running at the same time. They can probably keep the shows all straight, but you will probably need the internet to make sure you don’t show up to the wrong one. The show runs Fri thru Feb 27 at Belaire Theater, 444 E Pipeline Rd, Hurst. Tickets are $5-10. Call 817-284-1200.
