Wed 2 – Having avoided the sophomore slump with their album This Is All Yours from last year, the British group alt-J has proved themselves a band of many moods, ranging from aloof and refined to snarling and primitive. Thur 3 – How does one paint when one can no longer see? John Bramblitt found a way after losing his sight to complications from epilepsy and Lyme disease. The Denton native now paints using raised lines to feel his way around the canvas and identifying different colors through touch. He’ll give a demonstration of his extraordinary ability at 7pm at Patterson-Appleton Center for Visual Arts, 400 E Hickory St, Denton. Admission is free-$3.

Fri 4 – While Jubilee Theatre takes a much-deserved rest to gear up for the fall, DVA Productions steps into the void with Venus & Mars, Sheran Goodspeed Keyton and Joe Rogers’ musical that draws from the gamut of African-American music history. Jubilee fans take note: Keyton reunites here with her longtime Jubilee co-star Robert Rouse Jr. The show runs today thru Sep 13 at Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy St, FW. Sat 5 – Baron Wolman was the first-ever director of photography at Rolling Stone magazine and helped establish its reputation as the music industry’s premier glamour publication. He brings souvenirs from his storied career to Arlington. Rock and Roll Wall of Fame, an exhibit of photos and memorabilia, which also has a section on Austin musicians, runs today thru Oct 18 at Arlington Museum of Art, 201 W Main St, Arlington. Sun 6 – Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra makes the latest of its occasional bid for the science-fiction fans with Sci-Fi Spectacular. Jack Everly will conduct music from movies and TV shows, with soprano Kristen Plumley as a soloist and Commander William Riker himself, Jonathan Frakes, serving as narrator. Mon 7 – It’s now 10 years since Billy Bob’s started its Pickin’ for Preemies benefit concert for the Cook Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. No word yet on who’s playing, but the event runs all day and includes raffles and auctions to help you ring in Labor Day. The fun starts at 4pm at Billy Bob’s Texas, 2520 Rodeo Plaza Dr, FW. Tues 8 – Messi! Messi! Messi, Messi, Messi! Possibly the greatest soccer player who has ever lived will come to town for a Mexico vs. Argentina friendly match at AT&T Stadium. To deal with Lionel Messi and Argentina’s many other attacking options, El Tricolor will need all the experience and calming influence of 147-year-old defender Rafael Márquez, a former teammate of Messi’s at Barcelona.
