Bob Hess and Christie Vela co-star in Amphibian Productions’ The Quixotic Days and Errant Nights of the Knight Errant Don Quixote.

Wed 8 – David Heymann is an architect, so it makes sense that the hero of his debut novel My Beautiful City Austin works in the same profession, although he repeatedly fails to dissuade his clients from making decisions that erode the state capital’s weirdness. At 7pm, he stops by the Fort Worth Center for Architecture to discuss his venture into fiction at 3425 W 7th St, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-921-2111.

Thur 9 –  The Quixotic Days and Errant Nights of the Knight Errant Don Quixote is no straight adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes’ novel. Brenda Withers’ play is an avant-garde staging that starts out in an antiseptic hospital but soon evolves into a depiction of Quixote’s imagination, with a penny farthing bicycle representing his horse. The play runs today thru Aug 2 at Amphibian Stage Productions, 120 S Main St, FW. Tickets are $18-33. Call 817-923-3012.

Fri 10 – Mo’Nique recently appeared on the HBO biography Bessie, playing blues music legend Ma Rainey. Her film work other than that has been scant since she won that Oscar six years ago. Fortunately, she has stayed active on the stand-up circuit, and today thru Sat she stops by the Improv in Arlington, 309 Curtis Mathes Way. Tickets are $40-50. Call 817-635-5555.

Sat 11 – At a time of year when indoor sports are making more and more sense, the Dallas Derby Devils reach the midpoint of their home season with two bouts, one matching up the Death Row Rumblers against the Slaughterers, the other pitting the High Seas Hotties against the Suicide Shifters. The action starts at 7pm at NYTEX Sports Centre, 8851 Ice House Dr, North Richland Hills. Tickets are $12. Call 817-483-0237.

Sun 12 – Luigi Pirandello gave his name to a whole subgenre of theater in which characters become aware of their status and interact with the actors portraying them. Six Characters in Search of an Author is both a farce and a cry of anguish from characters who seek a God-like creator but find only self-absorbed theatrical folk distorting their story. DragStrip Courage’s production of his most celebrated play runs Fri thru Jul 19 at Arts Fifth Avenue, 1628 5th Av, FW. Tickets are $15-20. Call 817-923-9500.

Mon 13 – Other music venues have open-mic nights, but The Live Oak Music Hall & Lounge is trying something different. It’s an open recording session, in which performers who sign up and bring their own instruments can have two or three songs digitally recorded by the venue and then receive the recordings afterward. The limit is four inputs, so a full band is inadvisable. The session is at 7pm at 1311 Lipscomb St, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-926-0986.

Tues 14 – Paul Durand-Ruel helped modernize the profession of art dealer, being among the first to organize solo exhibitions and pay his artists stipends. Arguably more importantly, the Frenchman also was one of the first to recognize the impact of the Impressionist movement and display their works in his adopted country, the United States. The documentary tribute The Impressionists and the Man Who Made Them screens at 7pm at Cinemark Ridgmar, 1888 Green Oaks Dr, FW, and AMC Parks at Arlington, 3861 S Cooper St, Arlington. Tickets are $10.50-12.50. Call 800-326-3264 or 817-505-4519.
