Wed 17 – The drum corps competing in the 2015 DCI Tour Premiere will be out in the hot summer sun, but you’ll be watching them in the air-conditioned comfort of a movie theater, so you can appreciate that fact while you’re watching the skill of these talented and very overheated marching bands at 7pm at various movie theaters. Thur 18 – If you miss the days before everyone had a digital camera attached to their phones, you will want to get to the Impossible Road Show for a workshop in instant photography, where you can learn about the ins and outs of taking Polaroids. There’s another workshop tomorrow in Arlington, but this afternoon’s demonstration is at 1pm at Fort Worth Camera, 2900 W 6th St, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-335-3456.

Fri 19 – It turns out a lot of people have written stage plays called The Ties That Bind or something similar, but DVA Productions will perform Bill Hass’ play this weekend. This story of a mother and daughter trying to repair their frayed relationship and dealing with a dark secret runs today thru Jun 28 at Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy St, FW. Sat 20 – Bill C. Davis’ Mass Appeal scored Tony nominations when it debuted on Broadway in 1980. Now Circle Theatre is putting on this two-character play about a Roman Catholic pastor in a rich suburban parish and a new deacon who wants to shake things up over such issues as the ordination of women. Sun 21 – Twenty-three contestants from as far away as Tajikistan will be at TCU to compete in the first-ever Van Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition. The pianists competing here are all under 18, and one contestant is as young as 13. You can see the first-round performances for free. We’ll have coverage of the contest on our blog. Mon 22 – It seems distant now, the days when Shirley Temple was the undisputed biggest box-office draw in Hollywood for four straight years, something no actor has ever come close to matching. Temple enthusiasts can come to Fort Worth Community Arts Center to see Love, Shirley Temple, an exhibit of memorabilia from the little girl who captured America’s heart in the 1930s. Tues 23 – Historian H.W. Brands’ latest book, Reagan: The Life, is the first major biography of our nation’s 40th president in almost 15 years and has won praise for being free of the liberal grievances and the conservative hagiography that have dominated similar books.
