Long-suffering Rangers fans got a glimmer of hope last night when super prospect Joey Gallo channeled the ghost of Babe Ruth in his major league debut. The 21-year-old slugger was called up to fill in for the injured Adrian Beltre and went 3 for 4, including a homerun that landed in Kennedale. After the game he walked on water and fed the crowd of more than 30,000 with a single boomstick hot dog.
Moon Rising
Fort Worth has a new city council member. Cary Moon, a developer and president of the Heritage Homeowners Association, showed incumbent Danny Scarth the Fort Worth way out the door. Moon wants to build an arts district in east Fort Worth similar to the Bishop Arts District in Dallas. He also loves horses, long walks on the beach, and balancing budgets. Council members giggled as they gave Scarth a scarf as a goodbye gift.
Texas, Our Texas
Remember when Texans decided that a pending Navy Seal/Green Beret joint training exercise was really an excuse to take over the state and impose martial law? And the Federal Emergency Management Agency was erecting prison camps and readying Walmart stores as processing centers for political prisoners? Yeah? And then Abbot ordered the Texas State Guard to monitor the military exercise? Well now, Abbott wants federal money. And FEMA is gearing up for a major role in the cleanup – including places like Bastrop, Texas, where the Bastrop State Park dam failed – and where, just five weeks ago, a U.S. Army colonel trying to explain the pending military exercise was shouted down by hundreds of self-described patriots shouting “liar!”

Facebook was named in a state application by Winner Llc., doing business as Ernst Llc., for tax exemptions for a nearly $1 billion data center planned for AllianceTexas, tying the social media giant to the Fort Worth project. The $750 million project would produce an estimated 40 jobs, and both city and county officials have officially hit “like” on the deal –– although your parents still really don’t understand it, but enjoy seeing pictures of your kids.
All Fracked Up
Three more protesters were arrested at a Denton County fracking site. That makes six arrests in two days. Dozens of protesters arrived at the Vantage Fort Worth Energy site on Nail Road at 6:30 a.m. for a second day of protesting. Last year, the city passed an ordinance banning fracking, the the state responded by passing a counter-law that George Orwell would have found too far-reaching for fiction.
