WED ▪ 5

Artisan Center Theater’s current production of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty might appeal to the crowd that bought tickets to Maleficent this summer, but it’s worth seeing just as much for the troupe’s new 150-seat auditorium specially for its children’s theater productions. The show runs thru Nov 15 at 444 E Pipeline Rd, Hurst. Tickets are $5-10. Call 817-284-1200.

Honestly, if you told us that James Franco was doing an ice-dance interpretation of the terms and conditions from the Wi-Fi hotspot nearest his house, we’d believe you. However, the ubiquitous actor is instead starring as Lennie in National Theatre Live’s production of Of Mice and Men, with Chris O’Dowd as the slow-witted George. The broadcast is at 7pm at various theaters. Check Calendar for locations. Tickets are $15. Call 818-761-6100.

FRI ▪ 7

A wildly popular operetta in its time, The Merry Widow retains its champagne fizz more than 100 years after its debut. But will it survive translation? UNT will perform Franz Léhar’s comic stage work in English instead of the original German, so we can find out the answer as we savor the glories of Vienna’s Gilded Age. The opera runs tonight thru Nov 16 at Murchison Performing Arts Center, 801 N Texas Blvd, Denton. Tickets are $15-35. Call 940-369-7802.

SAT ▪ 8

What is footgolf? It’s a sport played on golf courses in which players try to kick a soccer ball into a 21-inch cup instead of a hole. This afternoon, Fort Worth Vaqueros host a footgolf tournament to raise funds for Kicks for Kids, a program that provides soccer equipment and game tickets to underprivileged Fort Worth children. The tournament is at 12:30pm at Sycamore Creek Golf Course, 401 Martin Luther King Fwy, FW. Registration is $25. Call 817-200-7355.

SUN ▪ 9

Even the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is going movie mad while the Lone Star Film Festival (see: sidebar) is running. Bernard Herrmann’s themes from Vertigo are beautiful enough to make you pass out. The concerts are Fri thru today thru Sun at Bass Performance Hall, 555 Commerce St, FW. Tickets are $27-85. Call 817-665-6000.

Allan Steele may look about 16, but he’s Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s new principal cellist, and he’ll be at TCU to give a master class in cello technique and interpretation. His appearance is courtesy of Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth, and it’s a chance to get to know this newest presence on the city’s classical music scene. The class starts at 7pm at Moudy Bldg, 2805 S University Dr, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-877-3003.
