The Dallas VideoFest kicks off today with a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger, a 1926 film based on the story of Jack the Ripper. Later on the festival will show This Is Spinal Tap, Charles Burnett’s masterpiece Killer of Sheep, Nancy D. Kates’ documentary Regarding Susan Sontag, and Charlie Lyne’s Beyond Clueless, tracing the cultural impact of Amy Heckerling’s 1995 comedy classic. We get the uneasy feeling that Addicted is going to be another movie in which a black woman is punished for inappropriate sex. Still, this advance screening of the film version of Zane’s softcore erotic novel is notable for featuring a live Q&A session with the novel’s single-named author. Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth usually performs in the Modern, but this weekend they’re moving a short distance to perform Sky Descending. They’ll be between the Kimbell Art Museum’s main building and the new Piano Pavilion, celebrating the outdoor space remaining after the new structure was built. More than 80 bands will help provide the soundtrack for ArtsGoggle as it makes its return to Fort Worth’s Near Southside today. The annual event features expanded hours, three artists painting their own murals in the South Main Village, and Texas-made short films being screened by James Johnston, whose Citizen Theater is scheduled to break ground next year. The venue that was known as the Lockheed-Martin Recreation Area no longer bears that name, but it will still host the 13th annual Pottery in the Park Festival and GemFest this weekend, giving you a chance to make your own ceramics, see demonstrations, and view all sorts of locally made handicrafts. You can’t blow up a gas station with your cell phone, but you can create an explosion by rubbing against the cloth surfaces inside your car while absent-mindedly talking on your phone and generating static electricity. That’s the latest find by Discovery Channel’s MythBusters, who have created Fort Worth Museum of Science’s new exhibit, MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibit, which focuses on combustion as well as flight, gravity, and speed.
