The recent mild controversy over the newly crowned Miss USA’s body type has made beauty pageants sort of relevant again, so now might be a good time to catch the Miss Texas pageant (an offshoot of Miss America, not Miss USA) and see if any unconventional body types are competing for the crown. The pageant runs thru Sat at Eisemann Center, 2351 Performance Dr, Richardson. Tickets are $36-75.

From the ashes of a pricey 1967 flop movie, Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan created a Tony-winning Broadway musical in Thoroughly Modern Millie, about a 1920s flapper who foils a white-slavery ring while in New York to snag herself a rich husband. This touring production stars former That’s So Raven co-star Anneliese van der Pol and runs today thru July 20 at Will Rogers Auditorium, 3401 W Lancaster Av, FW. Tickets are $45-100. Call 800-745-3000.

You have your pick of the Independence Day celebrations, but only the 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest has free samples of Parker County peach frozen custard by Curly’s Frozen Custard. The great thing about this is, it’s taking place early enough in the morning that you can still hit one of the other fireworks-based celebrations later. The contest starts at 10am at Curly’s Frozen Custard, 4017 Camp Bowie Blvd, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-763-8700.

SAT ▪ 5

Of course, if you’re feeling more Austrian this Fourth of July weekend, you may want to hit the Stockyards for a performance by Trachtenkapelle Rossatz. This brass-and-wind ensemble performs in traditional Austrian outfits and hails from Grapevine’s sister city of Krems, Austria. The group will be performing around North Texas all this week, but tonight they’re at 130 E Exchange Av, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-410-3185.

SUN ▪ 6

Jubilee Theatre makes the occasional foray into Broadway musicals instead of musicals created for the troupe, but you probably wouldn’t expect them to go for Little Shop of Horrors, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s kitschy adaptation of the science-fiction movie about the love of a man for a man-eating plant. The show runs Saturday thru Aug 3 at 506 Main St, FW. Tickets are $20-30. Call 817-338-4411.

MON ▪ 7

As part of Benbrook Public Library’s monthly music series, Rick Babb will be on hand to play some of his newest material. The grizzled veteran of Texas Music serves up a pleasant blend of country, bluegrass, and folk. The music starts at 7pm at 1065 Mercedes St, Benbrook. Admission is free. Call 817-249-6632.

TUE ▪ 8

Early July means that PianoTexas is finished and the Mimir Chamber Music Festival takes over TCU. This year, one performance will be at the new Renzo Piano Pavilion at the Kimbell. As usual, the festival offers an eclectic lineup of music, but tonight’s concert has a particularly Russian flavor, with Taneyev’s elegant String Quintet and Dmitri Sitkovetsky’s arrangement of Bach’s Goldberg Variations for a string ensemble. The performance is at 7:30pm at PepsiCo Recital Hall, 2800 S University Dr, FW. Tickets are $30. Call 817-257-7602.
