Lots of sci-fi movies in the 1950s and ’60s featured lone men traveling to planets or distant lands populated only by hot women. For some reason, it was never the reverse. The Wondercrust Movie Watchers Club will undoubtedly comment on this when they lob their wisecracks at Vittorio Sala’s 1960 crapfest Colossus and the Amazon Queen. The screening is at 10pm at The Grotto, 517 University Dr, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-882-9331.

Stage West showcases the work of local playwright Richard J. Allen with Starbright & Vine, a comedy about an aging comedian turning to a frustrated thirtysomething actress for new material for a high-profile TV gig. Let’s see if this new work improves on The Sunshine Boys, a play along similar lines that is now starting to show its age. Starbright & Vine runs Feb 27-Mar 23 at 821 W Vickery Blvd, FW. Tickets are $15-39. Call 817-784-9378.

This year presents lots of costume choices for the Oscar Night party at the Modern. You can go drag as Jared Leto from Dallas Buyers Club, ’90s chic as the stockbrokers from The Wolf of Wall Street, or as anybody from American Hustle. Word of advice, though: Avoid costumes that reference 12 Years a Slave. That’s a bad idea. Don’t do it. The party starts at 6pm at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-738-9215.

MON ▪ 3

UNT Concert Orchestra’s performance this evening includes Haydn’s “Il Distratto” Symphony and Jacques Ibert’s Suite Symphonique, but we’re most interested to hear Allan Bevan’s Nou Goth Sonne Under Wode, a stately setting of a medieval religious poem paying devotion to the Virgin Mary. The music starts at 8pm at Winspear Hall, 2100 I-35E, Denton. Tickets are $8-10. Call 940-369-7802.

TUE ▪ 4
