Turner Classic Movies is bringing Casablanca to theaters for one night, supposedly for its 70th anniversary, though they’re really jumping the gun by a full six months, since the film didn’t premiere until November 1942. Artspace 111 is a great place to spend Gallery Night (see: sidebar), but you’ll want to be here a couple of days early to take in the Fort Worth Weekly Visionary Awards. In addition to hailing the work of some great local artists, there’ll also be a nice party with lots of food and refreshments and an unplugged performance by Fort Worth Americana artists Telegraph Canyon. The world premiere of John B Hedges’ Fastball is on tap for this weekend’s concerts by Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, but that’s not all. Miguel Harth-Bedoya will also conduct Stravinsky’s splashy The Firebird suite, and cellist Alisa Weilerstein will join the orchestra for Elgar’s despairing Cello Concerto. Against the tide of console video games, the analog game of pinball continues to hold its followers. Proof of that is in the New Transformers Pinball Machine that will be given out as a door prize at the end of the Texas Pinball Festival, which also features hundreds of classic arcade games and slot machines set on free play. There are many different ways you can celebrate the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth, but one great way is to attend Artisan Center Theatre’s production of Oliver! The winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for poetry, Stephen Dunn will appear at UNT this evening to read from several of his more recent volumes.
