Once again, it’s time to get a jump on the holiday food drives by heading to North East Mall to see CANstruction, the annual display of temporary sculptures made out of canned goods erected to raise money for Tarrant Area Food Bank. This is the 15th year for the show, so expect some special displays. CANstruction runs thru Sun at 1101 Melbourne Rd, Hurst. Admission is free. Call 817-332-9177.

Raise a glass of Tokay and shout, “Egészségünkre!” for the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. The Budapest-based dance and music ensemble will be at Bass Hall this evening wearing colorful traditional costumes and performing whirling dances like the verbunkos (a military recruitment dance) and the tango-like csárdás. Having previously starred in Jubilee Theatre’s production of Charlayne Woodard’s Pretty Fire, Ebony Marshall-Oliver returns to the stage to perform the playwright’s follow-up show Neat, an autobiographical one-woman play about her relationship with her aunt Beneatha, who was brain-damaged as a child due to an all-white hospital refusing her treatment. Near Southside denizens unite! ArtsGoggle comes once again to showcase the unique character of the Fort Worth neighborhood, with live music by the likes of Brave Combo, Siberian Traps, Leopold & His Fiction, Patriot, Un Chien, and many others all along West Magnolia to go with the art on display. The event runs 4-10pm at various locations. Admission is free.

For its 15th iteration, Q Cinema moves its annual festival to autumn to showcase films like Breaking Through, Cindy Abel’s documentary about gay politicians (which features City Councilman Joel Burns); a documentary on drag performer Divine; and the high-school comedy G.B.F., from the director of the 1999 cult film Jawbreaker. The festival runs Thu-Sun at Rose Marine Theater, 1440 N Main St, FW. Single tickets are $8-10, passes $50-120. Call 817-723-4358.

It’s all about pirates this week, between Captain Phillips (see Film page) and Dora the Explorer Live! Dora’s Pirate Adventure. The adorable bilingual girl brings her show to Casa Mañana for two weeks of educational fun, running Oct 11-27 at 3101 W Lancaster Av, FW. Tickets are $16-24. Call 817-332-2272.

Picasso might not be the most adventurous pick for an art show, but it’s still a shock to see his “The Old Guitarist” on the walls of the Kimbell. The Age of Picasso and Matisse is a treasure trove of great modernist paintings on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago. If you own any books on art history, chances are some of the paintings reproduced in those tomes are now hanging at our local museum. The show runs thru Feb 16 at 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd, FW.
