It has been almost 2,000 years since a volcano buried the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in molten ash, preserving buildings and artifacts in almost pristine shape. You can see the results in Pompeii at the British Museum, a broadcast from the London venue that gives us a close look at these everyday objects from a metropolis that thrived so long ago. If your idea of Brazilian music is still stuck with Sergio Mendes and “The Girl from Ipanema,” you’ll want to head to UNT for their Festival Brasileiro, where conductor/composer João Guilherme Ripper will be on hand for performances of his colorful modernistic works as well as the music of Villa-Lobos, José Urcisino da Silva, and Walter Burles Marx. Texas Motor Speedway is not in Keller, but the track is nonetheless hosting KellerFest — two days of car shows, dog shows, arts and crafts, carnival games, and music by the likes of Live 80, Keeper of the Plains, and Vegas Stars. It’ll soon be too cold to swim, so bring your swimsuits for one last hurrah at the Beer, Bourbon & Brisket Festival. Three bourbon companies and five breweries (plus Woodchuck Hard Cider) will offer samples of their wares to go with the barbecue, while Jace Everett, Somebody’s Darling, and Whiskey Folk provide music to say goodbye to September. Night & Day saw the documentary A Place at the Table at last year’s Lone Star International Film Festival, then went out for frozen yogurt and realized that the $3.68 spent on the frozen treat is more than the U.S. government spends on feeding poor kids per day.
