A woman in a wheelchair came to the office recently and complained about bicycles being parked in the handicapped seating areas on the Trinity Railway Express trains that commute between Fort Worth and Dallas.

She says that on more than one occasion she has had to park her wheelchair in the aisle because the bicycles didn’t leave room for her in the wheelchair sitting area.

Once she asked some bicycle riders to move their bikes and they refused, she said.

Another time she complained to the conductor, who made little effort to make the cyclists move their bikes, she said.

The T spokeswoman Joan Hunter said bikes are allowed to be stored in the wheelchair area on TRE trains, but the bikes shouldn’t take precedence over disabled passengers.

“According to the TRE operations manager, we make room for wheelchair passengers in the wheelchair area, regardless of amount of bikes,” she said. “There are signs that designate that the areas are to be vacated for handicapped when needed.  The conductor provides boarding assistance to wheelchair passengers and should make sure they have a spot for their wheelchair, including asking that bikes be relocated to make room for the wheelchair.  I will ask that TRE conductors be reminded that they are to ensure the wheelchair passenger has a spot to ride in.”

Is anybody else out there having problems finding a spot for your wheelchair in the trains’ designated seating areas?
