Don’t think simply because Fort Worth is short on dedicated jazz venues that this town is short on jazz talent — not by a long shot.

One person on our list of notable jazzbos is Paul Unger, whose day job is as a bassist for Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. For nearly a dozen years, Ungar has been performing straight-ahead jazz around North Texas with his band. Flipside Trio, which released a self-titled album in 2011, has also performed at the central library a few times as part of its Third Thursday Jazz Series and is scheduled to play September’s installation of the free family-friendly event.

Past Flipside shows among the stacks have been devoted to single canonic albums, including Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. On Thursday, Unger’s band will take the library’s gallery stage to recreate Ah, Um, Charles Mingus’ paean to African-American composers and folk music that features “Jelly Roll,” “Open Letter to Duke,” and “Bird Calls,” among other memorable tunes. –– Edward Brown
