The makers of First: The Story of the 2012 Olympic Games hit the jackpot when they chose personable, multiple gold-winning Missy Franklin as one of the 12 first-time Olympians they decided to follow. Yet the other athletes profiled in this documentary also have compelling stories, including Masai tribesman David Rudisha, who shattered a world record in what has become known as the greatest 800-meter race ever run. The film screens at 7:30pm at multiple theaters. Check Calendar for locations. Tickets are $12.50. Call 818-761-6100.

FRI ▪ 31

Like a cross between Love Letters and Steel Magnolias, The Dixie Swim Club tells the story of five Southern women over the course of several decades as they meet for a yearly weekend at a beachfront cottage in North Carolina. This cozy drama by the team of Nicholas Hope, Jamie Wooten, and Jessie Jones is the penultimate show in Theatre Off the Square’s season. The show runs May 31-Jun 16 at 114 N Denton St, Weatherford. Tickets are $9-12. Call 817-341-8687.

What better way to take advantage of a sunny Saturday afternoon than Sunfest? The inaugural outdoor festival at Cobb Park features African drumming and dance, hip-hop music, authors’ appearances, and activities for kids. We’re looking forward to having this become a fixture on the social calendar to ring in the summer. The event is 11am at 2600 Cobb Park Dr, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-457-5700.

SUN ▪ 2

This year’s Texas Numismatic Association Convention and Coin Show includes a traveling exhibit on money in early America that features shillings and halfpennies from colonial times. It’s fascinating to track the turbulent history of America’s origins through its coinage. Plus, we like shiny things. The show runs Fri-Sun at Will Rogers Memorial Center, 3401 W Lancaster Av, FW. Admission is $3. Call 817-723-7231.

MON ▪ 3

Remember when musicians still used the U.S. Mail to communicate with one another? That’s how The Postal Service got its name, and the super-group’s legend has only grown in the years since it disbanded. In honor of the 10th anniversary of the release of the band’s only album, co-founders Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello have gotten back together and are touring. The duo will land in Grand Prairie tonight with Ra Ra Riot at 8pm at Verizon Theatre, 1001 Performance Pl, Grand Prairie. Tickets are $37-40. Call 972-854-5111.

TUE ▪ 4

We need better composers writing for Broadway so Frank Wildhorn can sink into the obscurity that his boring music so richly deserves. The Civil War, his concept album transplanted to the stage despite its unsuitability for the medium, opens this week courtesy of Artisan Center Theater, and it is your best bet on an uneventful Monday night. The show runs May 31-Jul 13 at Belaire Theater, 420 E Pipeline Rd, Hurst. Tickets are $14-18. Call 817-284-1200.
