1) Instrumental doom band Earth fills Club Dada (2720 Elm, Dallas) with majestic, cinematic dread on Wednesday night, with help from angsty rock band Helms Alee, who are touring a new record called Noctiluca. I’d never listened to them until just now, and I’d file what I heard under “post-punk.” But then again, the video that follows this verbiage suggests to me that Helms Alee would appeal to True Widow fans. 2) I’ve noticed that Mid-Atlantic grindcore band Full of Hell appears in a lot of music conversations I’ve had recently, which I’d gather means their Thursday night show at the Ridglea Room (3309 Winthrop) will be packed. I hope so, because that room’s acoustics can get pretty ring-y, and a room full of bodies will hopefully absorb some of those top-end frequencies. They have a reputation for appropriately intense live performances, so this is probably not a show to sleep on if you’re into this kind of music. Primitive Man, Racetraitor, and Vault Dweller fill the opening slots. Tickets are $12, doors are at 6, and the show is all-ages. Here’s a Full of Hell video:
3) On Friday night, catch local heavies Ox Combine, Old Earther, C.I. and Butcher Baker in a night of stoner metal amp worship at the Tin Panther (937 Woodward). Doors are at 8, Butcher Baker plays at 9, Old Earther at 10, Ox Combine at 11, and C.I. at midnight. Cover is $5, and the show is 21+. This is an Ox Combine song:
4) Also on Friday: Grady Spencer’s album release at Shipping & Receiving (201 S Calhoun). Grady Spencer & the Work are this week’s music feature, so you should go read it; if you miss the Orbans, they’ll probably fill that particular local music void. Frankie Leonie and Cody Culberson are the show’s openers. You know who Grady Spencer & the Work also remind me of a little? Siberian Traps. Anyway, the show is… I don’t know what the age limit is.
