A shattering and deeply scary experience when it’s done right, Benjamin Britten’s opera version of The Turn of the Screw does full justice to the ambiguity of Henry James’ story (are the ghosts real or imaginary?) while filling it with beautiful, strangely modulated music that suggests corruption and evil in the midst of an idyllic setting. UNT Opera’s production takes the stage at 8pm Fri and 3pm Sun at Murchison Performing Arts Center, I-35E & Av D, Denton. Tickets are $10. Call 940-369-7802.

Much has been made of Pablo Picasso and his private life filled with messy affairs, but relatively little attention has been paid to Henri Matisse, the painter who carried on a friendly yet intense rivalry with the Spaniard and who also had some issues with women. Howard Ginsberg’s play My Matisse explores this aspect of the artist’s life, and it receives a staged reading tonight courtesy of Amphibian Productions. The reading starts at 7pm at Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St, FW. Tickets are $5-15. Call 817-923-3012.
