For all that Fort Worth musician Abraham Alexander has done over the last year and a half, it’s easy to forget that the singer-songwriter has only released one single, “America.” The Fort Worth Weekly was the first local publication to give Alexander ink over that release via associate editor Eric Griffey’s review (“Abraham Alexander’s America” Aug 16, 2017).

Since then, Alexander has capitalized on favorable reviews, a growing following, and unexpected opportunities. Producers from London-based Abbey Road Studios reached out to Alexander after hearing “America.” That relationship led to two trips across the pond last year to work, write, and record at the iconic music studio. The fruit of those two months overseas was released today as Alexander’s second single, “Lover’s Game.”

I met up with Alexander to chat over coffee. The soft-spoken and pensive musician has been mulling over the intricacies of dating in the age of Bumble, high divorce rates, social media, and the attention-grabbing competition colloquially known as Instagram. Last June, Alexander was chatting with multi-instrumentalist Joseph Maynes about love in the digital age. Those thoughts, scribbled down at the time, later germinated into prose and music.

“He was talking about all his girl problems,” Alexander recalled. “I haven’t been in a relationship in a while, so I was connecting through him. Today, it is so hard to find that one [connection]. Maybe it’s because of our culture. Who wants to be hurt? People go into dating with their walls up.”

Alexander worked with Maynes to flesh out early bits of the song, which were later recorded at Modern Electric Sound Recorder in Dallas before being mixed and mastered at Abbey Road Studios. The single is Alexander’s first to be released under the label. Later this summer, he plans to release a five-song EP, also under Abbey Road Studios.

Fans can expect self-reflecting songs that honestly portray where the songwriter is at any stage of his life. Alexander said songwriting is a bit like therapy — once those emotions are out, they’re out.

He added this tip: Listen to “Lover’s Game” while driving.

“It has that unique sensation where you feel like you have to move,” he said. “The baseline is super moody, super unique. It takes you back and forward in time.”
