UTA’s Spring Theatrefest 2009 runs through the weekend and includes not only a production of Sam Shepard’s domestic drama of repression A Lie of the Mind but also a slate of one-act plays. The most interesting looks to be Jeff Stetson’s “The Meeting,” imagining an encounter between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. The festival runs Wed-Sun at UTA Fine Arts Bldg, 502 S Cooper St, Arlington. Tickets are $7. Call 817-272-2669.

What are the odds? The same day that UNT’s Earth Week celebration is featuring a documentary film (Liquid Assets) about water, 1919 Hemphill is trotting out Irena Salina’s Flow: For Love of Water, chronicling the increasing urgency of the problem of providing fresh water for the world’s population. The film screens at 7pm at 1919 Hemphill St, FW. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Call 817-920-9665.

The Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo come to Texas Wesleyan University this evening with a program mostly of established music for that instrument, much of it by the turn-of-the-century Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz. However, they’ll also be unveiling the world premiere of the Nocturne-Fantasy by Dallas composer Lowell Liebermann, and a new Liebermann piece is always an inviting prospect. The concert is at 7:30pm at Martin Hall, 1309 Wesleyan St, FW. Tickets are $15-25. Call 682-429-5482.

Fort Worth Opera is spotlighting Jake Heggie with its performance of his Dead Man Walking next week (see sidebar), though you don’t have to wait that long to hear the work of this 48-year-old Florida native. He’ll be at the Modern this afternoon for performances of his instrumental and vocal music, the latter featuring texts by Edna St. Vincent Millay and Sister Helen Prejean. The recital is at 2pm at 3200 Darnell St, FW. Tickets are $10-25. Call 817-335-9000.

As of this writing, only a little information is available on the UNT student choreography concert entitled Shaken & Stirred, a title that presumes you’ll leave the concert feeling those things in a good way. We do know that George Ferrie’s Inside My Mind is based on his own collegiate career, while Jenna Fisher’s Euphotic Zone is inspired by a Sigur Rós song. The performances run Fri-Sun at University Theatre, Welch & Chestnut sts, Denton. Tickets are $5. Call 940-565-2428.

Night & Day and our readers can thank Artisan Center Theater for giving us a stage show on an otherwise quiet Monday night. The play runs thru May 9 at Belaire Theater, 420 E Pipeline Rd, Hurst. Tickets are $7-13. Call 817-284-1200.

The Italian word concertante refers to music written for a soloist (vocal or instrumental) accompanied by an orchestra. TCU Symphony Orchestra‘s concert this evening is all about concertante music, featuring warhorses like Liszt’s First Piano Concerto and Rachmaninov’s Third, along with lesser known stuff such as Carl Maria von Weber’s Andante and Hungarian Rondo (a piece that can be performed either by a bassoon or a viola). The performance is at 7:30pm at Ed Landreth Auditorium, 2800 S University Dr, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-257-7602.
