Matilda arrives at Bass Hall in triumph this week.

Wednesday 14 – Australian comic treasure Tim Minchin has won his greatest acclaim as the songwriter behind Matilda the Musical, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel that won multiple Tony Awards and theater awards in the U.K. and Australia. Now the show, which premiered in 2011, finally comes to Bass Hall. The play runs thru Sun at 555 Commerce St, FW. Tickets are $44-115. Call 817-212-4280.

Thursday 15 – By all means wear your shorts to the Summer Shorts Beach Party at local movie theaters this week. The guys from MST3K will be joined by four other guests to make jokes about summer-themed short films, which we’re guessing is how they’ll fit seven commentators into the booth without them all stepping on one another. The live broadcast is 7pm tonight, while a rebroadcast runs 7pm Mon at various local theaters; see Calendar for locations. Tickets are $14. Call 818-761-6100.

Friday 16 – Is there anything left to say about Monet? Actually, yes. The Impressionist master started out as a caricaturist and graphic artist, and CUNY art history professor Joachim Pissarro will trace (ha ha!) the history of Monet’s work in this area and how it impacted his great paintings in a lecture entitled Monet Before Monet. The talk is at 6pm at the Kimbell Art Museum, 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-332-8451.

Saturday 17 – For those of you whose sense of camp is frozen in 1996, Q Cinema brings A Very Sordid Wedding to town. Del Shores’ play about gayness in a small Texas town inspired a film version in 2000, a TV series in 2008, and now a film sequel that screens this afternoon at the Modern, with a special appearance by writer-director Shores and actor Emerson Collins. The screening is at 1pm at 3200 Darnell St, FW. Tickets are $20-100. Call 817-723-4358.

Sunday 18 – Tom Dudzick joins Circle Theatre this weekend for the premiere of his newest autobiographical play, King o’ the Moon. Given that the downtown troupe has staged his Over the Tavern, Don’t Talk to the Actors, and Hail Mary! over the years, it seems like just the thing for the playwright to do. The show runs Thu thru Jul 15 at 230 W 4th St, FW. Tickets are $25-38. Call 817-877-3040.

Monday 19 – The live-action Resident Evil films may be dead, but the zombie series continues on in animated form in Resident Evil: Vendetta, which airs this evening at your local movie theater. This is the third installment of the animated series, continuing on like, uh, something that seems like it’s dead but isn’t really. The movie screens at 7pm & 10pm at various theaters; check Calendar for showtimes. Tickets are $10.50-12.50. Call 818-761-6100.

Tuesday 20 – Before Disney’s new version comes to the screen this winter, you can see Artisan Center Theater’s production of the stage version of Mary Poppins, in which book writer Julian Fellowes (who’d later create Downton Abbey) invented a new story that hewed closer
