The TCU Symphony Orchestra plays four concertos this evening, all featuring student soloists. Pianophiles will be there for Beethoven’s Fourth and Prokofiev’s Third, but devotees of new music may want to catch Emmanuel Séjourné’s Vibraphone Concerto, with its delicately colored first movement giving way to a loud, dramatic final movement. The vibraphone is often used in jazz, but this piece moves it into a classical setting. The concert starts at 7pm at Ed Landreth Auditorium, 2800 S University Dr, FW. Admission is free. Night & Day has long been a proponent of the late-blooming Czech composer Leos Janácek. You can get a big dose of his brightly colored, rhythmically idiosyncratic work at UNT’s International Janácek Festival and Conference this week, with seminars and performances devoted to the musical genius, including his well-known Sinfonietta and his song cycle The Diary of One Who Disappeared. Better known for his play A Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Rajiv Joseph further shows off his writing skills with the eye-catchingly titled Gruesome Playground Injuries, a one-act, nonlinear romance between two people who meet at various medical facilities between the ages of 8 and 38.
