The term “universal design” applies to designing buildings and environments that provide access to both disabled and non-disabled people. Tonight, Mike Love of Atelier Design Associates will elaborate on the principles behind this idea and how they can be applied in the home when he stops by for one of AIA Fort Worth’s design talks. Movie fans know Moira Buffini as the screenwriter who adapted Tamara Drewe and 2011’s Jane Eyre, but the Englishwoman of Irish descent has been writing for the stage for some time. This week, Stage West puts on Gabriel, an early play of hers about a mysterious young man who washes up on a beach in the Nazi-occupied Channel Islands during World War II. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth, and while Fort Worth Opera won’t be putting on any of his works, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra won’t be missing out. Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts preludes and overtures from three of Wagner’s operas (Rienzi, Lohengrin, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), as well as Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote. Unlike Side by Side by Sondheim, which draws from the composer’s early stage works, the musical revue Putting It Together concentrates on his later work, pulling songs from A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, and the film Dick Tracy. If you’re unfamiliar with Shakespeare’s late play The Winter’s Tale, it’s a crazy piece of work. Set on the seacoast of Bohemia (which is in fact hundreds of miles from the ocean), it’s about a king who suspects his queen of adultery and exiles her, expressing his suspicion in speedy rants that threaten to break the bounds of iambic pentameter. And one character gets eaten by a bear. A staged reading of The Winter’s Tale will be presented as part of AT&T Performing Arts Center’s complete Shakespeare series, Sun-Mon at 2403 Flora St, Dallas. You can brush up on your Latin when the Millikin University Choir comes to Fort Worth as part of its national tour this month. The composers on the bill are from all over the world, but much of the music on the program is sacred music in Latin.
