On Saturday, The Burning Hotels, Telegraph Canyon, Stella Rose, The February Chorus, and a few other local heavy-hitters will play Lola’s Saloon (3267 W. 6th St.) as part of the second annual Rock N’ For a Cure, whose proceeds will benefit the Cook Children’s Hematology-Oncology Clinic, a treatment facility for children afflicted by various blood cancers.

Via $15 donations at the door and gifts from local retailers, last year’s installation raised nearly $5,000. Doors open at 1 p.m., and donations will be accepted in the form of cash or check. Other bands playing include Lifters, The Red Herrings, Jefferson Colby, Dallas’ Romp Almighty, and The Iliads, basically a vehicle for former Voigt bassist, current Feb-Chor bassist, and indie singer-songwriter Taylor Craig Mills. Haven’t seen them yet but am really digging their tunes and live performance videos up at www.myspace.com/theiliadsmusic. Visit www.myspace.com/bigalsdad.

… Speaking of The Theater Fire (see story to the left), the lauded sextet has just finished a new album that’s now available only at live shows – it’ll be out online and in stores in the fall. Too bad you won’t be able to get your grubby mitts on Matter and Light because, well, there are no live shows. The band has canceled its tour. TTF also has done a video for the track “Uncle Wayne,” starring Jonathan Tucker (In the Valley of Elah, The Ruins) and Angela Bettis (Girl, Interrupted, Perfume) and directed by Brent Hanley (screenwriter, Bill Paxton’s Frailty).

… Centro-matic has a new record out. Two actually. One credited to Centro, the other credited to South San Gabriel, a side project, for lack of a better term, of Centro frontman Will Johnson’s. The arrival of another Centro-matic record is cause for rejoicing. Johnson, drummer and producer Matt Pence, and multi-instrumentalists Scott Danbom and Mark Hedman – indie musos and fans agree – can pretty much do no wrong. And this is coming from someone who, despite myself, often reflexively distrusts consensus hipster-opinion. However, we might have to temper our joy a bit.

Johnson has scheduled three local solo acoustic shows: one in Austin, one in the band’s home turf of Denton, and another in Big D. Notice anything missing? That’s right. Fort Worth. Complaint: registered. Visit www.centro-matic.com. … On one hand, I’m psyched about Dia De Los Toadies, the legendary North Texas band’s inaugural Labor Day Weekend festival at Possum Kingdom Lake in Graham. Joining the headliners will be Dove Hunter, Lions, Backsliders, and The Tejas Brothers, and tickets are $25. All cool. On the other hand, you can’t bring any pets, coolers, food, or beverages into the concert area – you can buy food and booze there, but nothing will assuage the pet problem.

True, Labor Day tradition demands that participants in daylong outdoor festivals – at the lake, no less! – be allowed to BYOB, especially because the kind of people who go to outdoor shows aren’t millionaires and would appreciate the opportunity to save some dough. But, on the bright side, by having to pay per beer and all, you might not booze as much. For tix, visit www.frontgatetickets.com.
