Oh Whitney is back.
Oh Whitney is back.

Prodigal sons Oh Whitney have returned. But only for a couple of weeks. Fronted by Fort Worth native Peter More, the alt-Americana quartet has roots in North Carolina –– Duke University, specifically –– but also has spent time in Brooklyn, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, the band’s current base of operations. More, whose family owns a house near San Miguel, is returning to the States with his bandmates to play a small tour. From North Texas, the guys will move on to Atlanta, Charleston, Durham, New York City (with the incredible Bobby Bare Jr.), and Philadelphia before returning to North Texas for another string of gigs, including Thanksgiving night (Thursday, Nov. 22), at Lola’s Saloon (2736 W. 6th St., 817-877-0666) with Fort Worth/Austin’s Frontier Brothers. (Cover charge is $7-10.) Oh Whitney’s tour kicks off tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 7) at The Flying Saucer (111 E. 4th St., 817-336-7470) as part of the annual Lone Star International Film Festival’s opening-night festivities downtown. More and company will perform material from their 2011 eponymous debut CD and forthcoming sophomore album. At the helm for the next record will be big-time industry drummer Rick Shlosser (Van Morrison, James Taylor, Dolly Parton), who co-produced the band’s first CD (“Say Oh Whitney,” Feb. 23, 2011). A Rock and Roll Hall of Famer also has expressed interest in working with the guys, who met him through their bassist, who works at an art gallery in San Miguel. One day last year the HOF’er and his wife just strolled in –– apparently, the city is super-progressive and arty and attracts artists from all over the globe, especially California, where the guy lives. After a conversation about art and music, contact information was exchanged, and the next thing the Oh Whitney guys knew they were jamming with him at a New Year’s Eve gig. The HOF’er, More said, intends to return to San Miguel in December. Oh Whitney hopes to release the album by March.

From the established names to the upstarts, HearSay’s got you covered. Though Dreamy Soundz is a small, young operation, co-owners Jennifer and Robby Rux have big ideas and the skill to see them to fruition. Jennifer has been producing local bands for a couple of years now out of her and her husband’s Fairmount home, but the couple celebrated a milestone last Saturday. At The Live Oak Music Hall & Lounge, Dreamy Soundz Records released its first album, Skeleton Coast’s marvelous eponymous debut. The Fort Worth space-rock band brought 50 copies of its vinyl platter to the show and sold every one of them in a flash. Congrats all around. … One 817 band in tight with the Ruxes is Fungi Girls, who recorded their Pitchfork-approved Some Easy Magic at Dreamy Soundz. Along with another member of Team D.S., The Longshots, Fungi will share a bill with Dallas’ Oddlot and Street Arabs and L.A./Fort Worth’s DJ Son of Stan on Thursday as part of Fort Live Wrecks Lola’s, the 817 music blog’s monthly tribute to the dearly departed Wreck Room that takes place at Lola’s Saloon. Cover is $5-9.
