THU ▪ 27

John Huston’s The African Queen is an adventure picture that runs on the unlikely chemistry between the mismatched pair of lead actors, Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. The film concludes Cinemark’s Fall Classic Film Series and screens at 2pm and 7pm at Cinemark Town Center, 2041 Hwy 287, Mansfield and Cinemark Tinseltown, 911 Hwy 114, Grapevine. Tickets are $4-8.

FRI ▪ 28

Robert Bolt’s A Man for All Seasons is a vigorous if somewhat monochromatic depiction of the last days of Sir Thomas More, the philosopher and future saint who defied his friend King Henry VIII when the monarch wanted his latest marriage annulled. The show can be a powerful ethical statement when it’s properly cast. The play runs Sep 27-Oct 7 at Theatre Wesleyan, 1309 Wesleyan St, FW. Tickets are $4-8. Call 817-531-2311.

SAT ▪ 29

Remember the film Drumline?  Well, that type of “show band” competition comes to Fort Worth this afternoon at Herman Clark Stadium. The first annual Cowtown Battle of the Bands will establish bragging rights among Fort Worth ISD schools. The competition is 11am-4pm at Loop 820 & Wichita St, FW. Tickets are $8-10. Call 817-938-8892.

SUN ▪ 30

An oddity in Stephen Sondheim’s oeuvre, Assassins is less of a play and more of a song cycle imagined for presidential killers and would-be killers through American history. The banjo-accompanied “The Ballad of Booth” (referring to John Wilkes Booth) is a highlight. TCU’s production runs thru Sun at Buschman Theatre, 2800 S University Dr, FW. Tickets are $10-25. Call 817-257-8080.

MON ▪ 1

TCU Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Choir land a gig at Bass Hall this evening entitled Russian Revolutionaries, with Shostakovich’s splashy Festive Overture and Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, the first of which you’ll recognize from the song “Stranger in Paradise,” which shares the same melody. Prokofiev’s cantata from his score for the film Alexander Nevsky rounds out the concert. The music starts at 7:30pm at 555 Commerce St, FW. Tickets are $10-20. Call 817-212-4280.

TUE ▪ 2

The cupboard seems rather bare for entertainment options tonight, but the Maloof Money Cup World Skateboarding Championship might well be good for the X Games crowd. The presentation broadcasts highlights of the competition from South Africa and is sure to feature some jaw-dropping tricks. The film screens at 7:30pm at various theaters. Check Calendar for locations. Tickets are $12.50.
