Tarrant County employees better start loosening up their arms and working on their fastballs.
County Judge Glen Whitley indicated at this morning’s county commissioner’s meeting that he might consider letting someone else throw out the first pitch at an upcoming Texas Rangers game.
Each year, county employees get discounted tickets for a day at a Rangers game, and the county judge gets to toss out the first pitch. At this year’s county outing, slated June 23 at the Ballpark in Arlington, Whitley might let someone else throw a heater across home plate.
He even suggested one of Tarrant County’s “oldest” employees might be nominated, and looked squarely at Commissioner J.D. Johnson, who has been a public servant for more than 30 years.
Whitley quickly corrected himself, referring to Johnson as the most “tenured” employee.
Johnson, who has probably smoked more cigarettes than Keith Richards and the Marlboro Man combined, didn’t seem very eager to become an athlete for a day.
“You have to be present to pitch,” Johnson joked.
Then again, Johnson does resemble a noted baseball player from these parts:
