Cows are tough critters. If you don’t believe me, watch Rawhide.

Cows once walked on four legs across the toughest terrains imaginable in slushy winters and scorching summers from Texas to Kansas, consuming nothing but grass and water, and lived to tell about it. Well, actually they died soon after to become steaks for our plates, but my point is — cows are literally as tough as leather.

In April, a spill at a Chesapeake Energy Corp. well site leaked into a nearby pasture in northwest Louisiana.

And 17 cows joined their bovine brethren in heaven.

The Shreveport Times reports that Chesapeake waited hours before telling state officials about the environmental mishap and didn’t notify local law enforcement authorities.
