Quite a few of us who enjoy Kinky Friedman’s brand of smart irreverence were disappointed in his 2006 run for the Texas governorship. It seemed he didn’t care enough to brush up on important issues, one-liners were all he had at campaign stops, and he came across as a Palin-esque know-nothing in some TV interviews.
Let’s hope Friedman has learned something from that go-round, and is aiming for the Democratic nomination with the intention to be more than just another politically incorrect Texas cartoon character. (“Mad Hatter” Perry has exhausted his tea party novelty status). His campaign website just announced ”A Bloody Mary Morning With Willie Nelson”, a $1000-a-plate brunch fundraiser on September 16 in Plano. Bringing out a big-gun attraction like Willie to fill the coffers is a no-brainer. In the meantime, let’s hope Friedman’s exercising his little gray cells for some serious debate come campaign time.
