Longtime readers probably remember Weekly dance critic Leonard Eureka’s raves about Bruce Wood Dance Company, a Fort Worth-based Modern troupe founded in 1995 by the titular choreographer, who studied under Balanchine at New York City Ballet. In 2007, BWDC bowed to economic pressures and closed up shop. A short documentary about the company’s last days, Fallen Angel, has been nominated for Best Short Documentary honors by the Fourth Annual Trail Dance Film Festival (January 22-24 in Duncan, Okla.), one of MovieMaker’s “25 Coolest Film Festivals” (2009). The film, produced by Fort Worth-based Broken Films and written and directed by Broken Films’ Mark Whittier, will be screened at TDFF on Sun., Jan. 24.

Fallen Angel premiered at the 2008 Dallas Video Festival and in 2009 was voted as Best Documentary at the Q-Cinema Festival.

  1. it’s too bad bruce wood’s company had to close up. i saw 5 or 6 performances, most notably his takes on argentine nuevo tango composer astor piazzola.

a former girlfriend of mine who came to the old balanchine based company in FW under paul mejia (she came from your old stomping grounds the pittsburgh ballet – not that you actually “stomped” in said ballet : ) – hipped me to piazzola and hence wood’s company.
