The Wall Street Journal has reviewed the Kimbell Art Museum’s current exhibition, From the Private Collections of Texas: European Art, Ancient to Modern. WSJ critic Willard Spiegelman calls the show a “giant Christmas stocking stuffed with more than 100 random goodies.” Rembrandt, Monet, Mondrian, Tiepolo, and Klee, among many others, are all represented. Spiegelman says the seemingly disparate sources are all theoretically linked by “several stories.” One is about how some major-moneyed Texans have spent their dough over the decades. The other is about collectors’ personal tastes. Pieces from as early as 700 B.C. to the late-Modern period (circa 1940) are included. Many of them are rarely seen in public.

The exhibit will hang until late March.
