Pretty much all day tomorrow (Saturday) at the Kimbell (3333 Camp Bowie Blvd, in the Cultural District, 817-332-8451) will be devoted, and rightfully so, to Philip Haas’ new, groundbreaking exhibit –– Butchers, Dragons, Gods & Skeletons –– a series of filmic installations inspired by pieces in the museum’s permanent collection. From 10 a.m. ’til noon, the Oscar-nominated Haas (Angels & Insects) will sign copies of the exhibition catalog with A.S. Byatt, the Booker Prize-winning novelist who contributed the forward. (Byatt also will sign copies of her own books.) At 2 p.m., Haas, Byatt, and the Kimbell’s deputy director, Malcolm Warner, will lead a panel discussion on the exhibition and its conceptual underpinnings. Admission is free.
Tomorrow night (Saturday) at The Chat Room Pub (1263 W Magnolia Av, on the near South Side, 817-716-8057) will be a fundraiser for the Metrognome Collective, a Fort Worth-based multi-disciplinary arts nonprofit, with Fight Bite, Eat Avery’s Bones, Akkolyte, Darktown Strutters, The Great Tyrant, and Personal Victories With George Quartz.
On Sunday, ZZ Top and Aerosmith are playing Superpages.com Center (1818 1st Av, Dallas, 214-373-8000). I can pinpoint the exact date and time when I started liking ZZ: 12:11 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2008. The wifey and I were watching the AT&T Blue Room channel at her sister’s house when a videotaped live show by the Houston trio came on. Up until then, the band’s Southern-fried rock seemed pretty one-dimensional and repetitive to me. But watching Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard play and how tastefully and musically Gibbons could elicit waves of melodies out of only frets 1 through 9 and how hard the rhythm section could hit made me realize that I had been mistaking redundancy for simplicity. I’ve been a fan ever since. Even of this stuff.
Aerosmith has been churning out versions of the same two or three songs for the past 30 years.
Tix range from a relatively reasonable $49.50 to a scandalous $200.
And finally:
Oh oh OH-oh-oh. Oh oh OH-oh. Oh oh OH-oh-oh …
Awww, yeeeaaah! The New Kids (or “NKOTB” if you’re nasty) are in town tonight (Friday), and they’ll be Running Man-ing and poppin’ ’n’ lockin’ in sync at Superpages.com Center. You can bet that a lot of thirty- and fortysomething moms and pops will be in the house, “dancing” in their seats –– and paying for it handsomely the next day. Opening act is Jabbawockeez. Show starts at 7 p.m. Tix are $25-85.
YOU know what you did …
Et tu, Antony?
Don’t forget to tell them about Jeff Prince’s “Up Down” CD release party from 3 to 7 pm Saturday July 18 at Lola’s Saloon, 105 W. Exchange Ave, in the Stockyards.
Not because Jeff’s a friend and co-worker, but his new album IS very good. You SHOULD go to the show. Beautiful weather, fun Texas Music, cold beer in an air-conditioned environment — what more could you ask for.
