The fight for little Maddie Higgins continues. The 5-year-old Fort Worth girl is battling brain cancer –– with a smile on her face –– and a grassroots campaign, Fight for Maddie, has been busy holding fundraisers over the past several months to help her family pay for her treatment and to raise awareness of similar childhood illnesses.

Previous Fight for Maddie benefit concerts (and bake sales) have helped raise thousands of dollars for her treatment. The next show, Sunday, Mar. 18, at Lola’s Saloon (2736 W. 6th St., 817-877-0666), stands to be the biggest yet. Opening for the headliners, Austin-based experimental-pop stylists Octopus Project, will be several stellar acts: Baltimore’s moody, shimmering Lower Dens (think: Mazzy Star, The Church), Denton anti-stars Peopleodian, probably my favorite new Fort Worth band, the garage-rocking Doom Ghost, and everybody’s main man, “Uncle Carey” Wolff, who recently told his best friend Facebook that his new band, The Grackles, with bassist Neil Schnell (Velvet Love Box, The Missile Men) and guitarist John Stevens (Sally Majestic, ex-Confusatron), will begin laying down tracks for an EP soon.

The festivities start early (2-ish) for the bands to be out of there before the evening concert starts.
