Dear Weekender subscribers (and you skinflints who don’t
subscribe to our awesome weekly A&E newsletter), due to
circumstances beyond our/my control, this week’s newsletter
is all about Valentine’s Day. But I went ahead and put
together a Weekender anyway. Lots of fun stuff to do this
weekend, starting tonight.
Orphan Art Project Benes
Multiple artsy Fort Worth folks will be pitching in over the
next few weeks to support the Orphan Art Project, in which
artsits all over the world create and sell art for two
privately owned South African orphanages. The first of
several fundraising events takes place Friday at The Where
House (2510 Hemphill St, Near South Side, 817-913-7777). The
Tin Art Show will feature art and crafty art by Fort Worth’s
Piranha Bear collective, food and booze for sale, a raffle,
and performances by several talented musos, including Fort
Worthians Secret Ghost Champion, Southern Gothic
singer-songwriter Clint Niosi, and alarmingly talented
upstart Brenna Manzare. Proceeds from art sales and the $10
cover will go toward OAP. A second OAP event will take place
Sunday night at Lola’s Saloon (2736 W 6th St, 817-877-0666).
Metal for Orphans will feature three heavy-hitting North
Texas doom metalists: Lotus Sutra, Pagan Assassin, and Four
Days to Burn. Proceeds from the $5 cover will go toward OAP.
The last and arguably biggest OAP event will be on Saturday,
Feb. 18, at Casa Mañana (3101 W Lancaster Av, 817-332-2272).
Super Bowl-Watching Parties
Though there’s nothing particularly local about this year’s
Super Bowl — unless you count the fact that the Giants and
Cowboys play in the same division, giving locals somebody to
root against — local bars and bar/restaurants will be
televising the big game, and why the hell not? Football’s the
greatest sport ever invented, and the Super Bowl represents
the last game for a while. One place that’s great anytime but
particularly great during big games is Papa G’s Bedford (2900
Hwy 121, 817-354-4140), where domestics and pints will be
only $2 a pop, pitchers only $6.25, and appetizers discounted
throughout the game. Another excellent though less
traditional spot for Super Bowl-watching will be Lucky Strike
(2845 W 7th St, 817-566-1470), where the customer with the
best fan costume can win a $50 gift card to Lucky Strike
(announced at halftime). There’ll also be beer bucket
specials throughout the game. The Pour House (2725 W 7th St,
817-335-2575) will definitely be in on the SB action,
offering a $7.95 all-you-can-eat buffet featuring Super
Sloppy Joe Sliders, Cajun sausage chili with chips, Pour
House Hot Dogs, Buffalo fries, and more.
Pete Feresten Exhibit Opening
Pete Feresten will always be remembered as Fort Worth’s
premier art photographer, especially in relationship to the
South Side. Opening tonight (Thursday) from 5 to 7pm at The
Art Corridor II Gallery (TCC Southeast Campus, 2100 SE Pkwy,
Arlington, 817-515-3522) … my mind wanders to the south
side of town, a “composite vignette,” says ACII curator
Christopher Blay, of Feresten’s massive portfolio. Admission
is free. The exhibit will hang until Mar 8.
Oh, That Frank Artsmarter
ACII curator Christopher Blay (see: above blurb) has an evil
alter-ego who comes to life every now and then to comment on
the art world at large. Not too long ago, this character,
Frank Artsmarter, “stood for art” — he actually spent six
hours standing in front of the Modern Art Museum of Fort
Worth. Just. Standing. But for art! Mr. Artsmarter’s latest
divertissement is Modern ruined, thick and wordy, a
one-evening-only mixed-media work taking place 7-10pm on
Saturday at a newly renovated formerly vacant apartment,
Historic Bomar Apartments (1507 Alston Av, South Side,
817-308-7598). The event is BYOB, and there’ll be a free
hot-pop of Ramen noodles.
Shows of Ever-Increasing Significance
Tonight (Thursday), Lola’s (2736 W 6th St, 817-877-0666) will
ring with the sounds of Fort Worth’s blues-breaking Quaker
City Night Hawks opening for Kansas’ Split Lip Rayfield.
Cover is $12-18. (And if you’re there, say hi to that clucker
Cockburn for us.) The Grotto (517 University Dr, Cultural
District, 817-882-9331) will be the place to be Saturday
night, when three sludgy-to-melodic Fort Worth outfits —
Cosmic Trigger, FTW, and Southern Train Gypsy — perform.
