The Marvelous Wonderettes kicks off Artisan Center Theatre’s 2018.

Wednesday 03 – Dallas-based Jane E. Jones has a long list of exhibits and awards, but none of them seem to be on our side of the county line for some reason. The artist will be in Denton this evening courtesy of VAST to give a demonstration of her techniques for painting with watercolors and acrylics. The event is at 6:45pm at Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 E Hickory St, Denton. Admission is free-$5.

Thursday 04 – We hate sending you to Dallas, but there’s not a great deal else to do so early in the year. Dallas Theater Center winds up its run of Fade, Tanya Saracho’s comedy about a Mexican-born novelist who joins the writing staff of an American TV show. We hope nobody in the play is based on Louis C.K. The show runs thru Sun at Wyly Theatre, 2400 Flora St, Dallas. Tickets are $36-67. Call 214-880-0202.

Friday 05 – It’s been a while since the Lone Star Brahmas played here, with the NAHL winter break. They return refreshed and looking to make up ground on first-place Shreveport, starting with this weekend’s home stand against the Corpus Christi IceRays. It’ll be February before they have another home date, so mind that. The games are today thru Sat at NYTEX Sports Centre, 8851 Ice House Dr, North Richland Hills. Tickets are $10-23. Call 817-336-4423.

Saturday 06 – Brahms’ Third Piano Quartet is sometimes referred to as the “Werther Quartet,” referring to Goethe’s 18th-century novelette about a passionate young man who kills himself for love. Brahms even told his music publisher to print the work with the image of a man holding a gun to his head on the cover. This frustrated, emotional piece is the linchpin of Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth’s first concert of the year. The music starts at 2pm at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St, FW. Tickets are $20-30. Call 817-877-3003.

Sunday 07 – In Unity churches, the White Stone ceremony is held on the first Sunday of the new year, when parishioners are given their own white tile and encouraged to write a word or two on it symbolizing what they wish to achieve in the new year. The ceremony is at 9am & 11:30am at Unity Fort Worth, 5051 Trail Lake Dr, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-423-2965.

Monday 08 – The midweek is slow, and easily the most notable thing going on is Shen Yun returning to Bass Hall. Seeing this show of traditional Chinese dance is not only beautiful but subversive, since it promotes the spiritual practices of Falun Gong, which the Chinese government is trying to suppress. The show runs today thru Jan 10 at 555 Commerce St, FW. Tickets are $80-120. Call 817-212-4280.

Tuesday 09 – While most theater groups are still in winter hibernation, Artisan Center Theatre is right back at it after the new year with The Marvelous Wonderettes, a jukebox musical about four high-school friends in 1958 who try to form a singing group. Tonight’s performance will be interpreted for the deaf. The show runs Fri thru Jan 27 at Belaire Theater, 420 E Pipeline Rd, Hurst. Tickets are $12-24. Call 817-284-1200.
