The musical 42nd Street runs Tue thru Sun at the Bass Hall.

Remember vintage Broadway musicals with big company dance numbers, extravagant costumes, and powerful vocals? Performers in the musical 42nd Street do. They are getting ready to star in the well-known show’s local premiere at the Bass Performance Hall.

The story of this classic musical has been retold a few times. The 1980 show is based off both a book and movie from the 1930s by the same title. All three stories are united by the theme of hope while reaching for the American Dream. The tale is about small-town aspiring actress Peggy Sawyer and her trip to the Big Apple. Here, she auditions for a role in the musical Pretty Lady and waits for her chance to rise to stardom in the stage world.

For a musical about musicals, we can count on this musical adaptation to do well. In fact, the Tony Award-winning team who earned the play the Best Musical Revival honor in 2001 is staging this performance at Bass Hall. And, of course, there will be the classic songs “We’re in the Money” and “I Only Have Eyes for You,” among others.
