At Tarrant County’s theater venues this week, the marquee opening looks to be Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, the 2013 Tony Award winner for Best Play. Christopher Durang’s send-up of Chekhov’s dramas takes place in Bucks County, Pa., where three middle-aged siblings reunite on the family estate that may have to be sold. Expect lots of riffing on Chekhovian ennui (or Weltschmerz, if you prefer the German term), but the play also has jokes about Hollywood and a party with Disney costumes, so there’ll be plenty for non-theater fans to laugh at, too. Stage West brings this work to the area.
Elsewhere, Hip Pocket Theatre begins its season with The Enchanted Lake, Johnny Simons’ meditation on the transmigration of souls, with music by Darrin Kobetich. And while a production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella rolls through Bass Hall later in the month, Artisan Center Theatre is putting on its own version of the musical fairytale this week. Lastly, one of our live theater venues becomes a comedy club this weekend when Baron Vaughn does his set. The actor and comic just landed a regular role opposite Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin on the TV series Grace and Frankie, and he’ll perform at Amphibian Stage Productions.
