There are so many theater openings this week that we didn’t feel right choosing among them. Instead, we’re recapping all of them here. It starts on Wednesday, when various local movie theaters air King Lear from Canada’s Stratford Festival. Colm Feore plays the title role in Shakespeare’s tragedy. If you prefer your theater live, however, you may want to head to Casa Mañana, where Ruta Lee (who turns 80 in May and is in her seventh decade in the acting profession) will portray Clairee in Casa’s production of Steel Magnolias.
Thomas Ward’s International Falls received its world premiere five years ago at Addison’s Out of the Loop festival. Now Stage West puts on this two-hander (starring Ward and his real-life wife) about a touring standup comic who has a one-night stand with a desk clerk at a Holiday Inn in Minnesota. Similarly, Amphibian Stage Productions is giving us our first look at Time Stands Still, Donald Margulies’ play about a wounded photojournalist and her partner who return stateside from Iraq and get a visit from her ex-boyfriend. In its short life, this work has drawn performances by a lot of powerful actresses (Laura Linney, Anna Gunn, Alicia Silverstone, Christina Ricci). It all adds up to a banner week for local theatergoers.
