The North Texas scene recently lost two talented musicians.
On Sunday, July 27, Leonard Belota, a jazz trumpeter who toured with the Stax Records band, according to local jazz luminary Johnny Case, died at home under hospice care after a long battle with assorted illnesses. He was 67.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11, at the Colleyville Community Center, 5301 Riverwalk Dr. (817-503-1330).
Along with testimonies from family and friends, there will be music.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Belota’s name to the Jazz Foundation of America, 322 W. 48th St., 6th Floor, New York City, NY 10036.
Another memorial, this one for Justin Elliot, the longtime Josh Weathers Band guitarist who died on Tuesday, July 29, at the age of 29, will be held 7 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) at Crossroads Christian Church, 6450 Texas 360, Grand Prairie (817-557-2277). The Arlington native died of “low voltage electrocution,” according to DFW.com by way of the Tarrant County medical examiner.
A visitation will be at 5 p.m. tonight at Moore & Sons Funeral Chapel, 4216 S. Bowen Rd., Arlington (817-275-2711).
