Appropriately enough for the Halloween season, Dallas Summer Musicals is putting on The Addams Family, the Broadway musical based on the 1960s TV show. With a presidential election coming up, the universities are holding a bunch of lectures and talks designed to capitalize on the uptick of interest in politics. The Fogelson Honors Forum at TCU features Ari Fleischer, press secretary under President George W. Bush, and Paul Begala, aide to President Bill Clinton. Reportedly, the late Etta James saw Beyoncé portray her in the 2008 film Cadillac Records and left unimpressed with her singing. Fortunately, Sheran Keyton won’t have to worry about such matters when she stars in Simply Etta, a one-woman show based on the legendary R&B singer’s life and career. Fort Worth’s roller derby team gears up for its upcoming season with the Dallas Derby Devils Carnival and Chili Cook-Off. The fund-raising event features not only a chili contest but also contests in making salsa and beans and margaritas. But don’t mix roller skating and too many ’ritas. For one evening, you won’t have to go to Dallas to hear the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. That’s because the orchestra will come to UNT to play Berlioz and Dvorák under the baton of Alasdair Neale.
