File this under “really scary:” New polls indicate that Rick Santorum is the favorite primary candidate by a wide margin among Texas Republicans. (He also leads significantly in national polls; he’ll be in North Texas this week to raise money for his campaign).

Santorum is so rabidly batshit right-wing, he takes hard right stands on issues that are barely even issues anymore. He’s against birth control, basic prenatal health exams, and has criticized married women for having careers outside the home. In contrast, the vast majority of moderates and even many conservatives long ago decided that, on balance, they’re pro-contraception, pro-amniocentesis, and pro-women working to support themselves and their families in a crappy economy. They’re commie pinko hippies that way.

Many people still think Republicans will eventually hold their noses and accept that Romney is the only viable competitor against Obama. But in the meantime, Texas Republicans, do you really want to go on record as supporting a man who thinks condoms are contributing to society’s downfall? We still haven’t lived down electing Rick Perry as governor. Three times.

  1. I’m a Democrat, so of course I always vote in the Republican primary. I’ll be voting for Santorum this year, since he is most likely to doom the GOP to a few more years in the wilderness. It’s not easy picking the most insane Republican candidate to vote for when you have such an embarrassment of riches. The inmates really have taken over the asylum in that party.
