I took the above photo in January and posted it on Blotch under the headline “Jacksboro Highway Like Time Travel.”
The oldtime view from the Conoco station near the corner of Jacksboro Highway and Beverly Hills Drive was always cool to look at while gassing up. It made me feel like I was standing in a Happy Days scene — the payphone, the Coke signs, the old water-cooled air conditioner. I could almost see Fonzie sitting on his motorcycle.
The photo and blog post were the first in what would become a series of articles (links below) on Jacksboro Highway landmarks.
I bring all this up because I stopped at the Conoco station for gasoline this morning and my favorite little scene has changed. The building’s gone, along with the Coke signs and air conditioner. And the receiver is missing from the payphone.
