Remember Nick Folk?
Folk is the field goal kicker who was booted out of Dallas after a poor season in 2009 (he went 18 of 28 for a 64.3 percent average — ouch).
Jerry Jones used a sixth round pick to get Folk in the 2007 draft, a risky move since kickers aren’t typically drafted. Folk had a great rookie year and made the Pro Bowl. He was even better in 2008. Then he developed a temporary hip problem, had a bad year, and was sent packing.
This year with the New York Jets, Folk also had a rough spell but ultimately went 30 of 39 for a 76.9 percent average, including eight for eight down the stretch. On Saturday he kicked the game winning field goal to push the Jets past arch rival Indy Colts and Peyton Manning in the wild card playoff game.
Cowboys kicker David Buehler can similarly rebound after his terrible 2010 season. The upside on him is even better than Folk. Buehler is 23, Folk is 26. Buehler has a stronger leg, is super fast, built like a linebacker, and he’s a much better tackler than Folk.
So, Coach Dimples, don’t waive him or trade him — teach him.
You must be smoking K-2 again if you think this stiff is ever going to make it as a field goal kicker. He used to be a great kickoff specialist, but then they tried to make him into a field goal kicker and now he can’t do either one worth a damn. He must be a head case. I say we cut our losses.
The Cowboys need to bring back a kicking coach. Tom Landry had one and so did Jimmy Johnson.
I don’t know when the team stopped having a coach dedicated only to the kickers / punters. Maybe they stopped in the Parcell’s era.
Ben Agajanian was Landry’s kicking coach and well-to-do parents like in Highland Park would hire Ben to coach their kid to kick.
The Cowboy did hire Chris Boniol, as a kicking consultant for Buehler last year. I should Google before commenting. Boniol is the 1st kicking coach they’ve had in years tho.
Maybe they should hire Dr. Phil instead of Boniol.
