TARRANT COUNTY JUDGE GLEN WHITLEY

Typically well-dressed Tarrant County Judge Glen Whitley must don a hideous looking Wisconsin Badgers sweatshirt at the next commissioner’s meeting if the TCU Horned Frogs happen to get whupped in the Rose Bowl.

Whitley wagered with Wisconsin Dane County Executive Scott McDonell that the Frogs will beat the Badgers on New Year’s Day.

WIPE THAT SMUG LOOK OFF THIS BADGER'S FACE!

There’s also a case of beer at stake — Whitley put up a case of “Texas-made Shiner Bock,” according to a just-received press release

“We are so proud of our TCU Horned Frogs and what they achieved,” he said in the release.

Whitley missed an opportunity to spread some pride and joy on another hometown success story — Rahr & Sons Brewing Co.

Rahr beats Shiner Bock any day of the week, and it’s brewed right here in our own backyard.

I called Dane County to ask what kind of beer they’d be sending to Tarrant County in case the Badgers lost.  McDonnel’s chief of staff Topf Wells (yes, that first name is spelled correctly) said they’d send a case from Capital Brewery.

“It’s obviously in Dane County, in Middleton, a community just outside of Madison,” he said. “It’s a completely local brewery. Their beers are very well thought of, very popular in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest.”

The Madison area is rich with breweries. McDonnel had to choose just one, and he chose Capital.

Fort Worth, on the other hand, only has two breweries — Rahr and Miller Brewing Co.

Rahr would have been my choice.

Can we put this on the commissioner’s agenda, please?

  1. Rahr Bucking Bock is just about my favorite beer ever. I wish it was made year around like it once was.

On the other hand, Rahr Stormcloud might be the worst beer I have tasted. I still have four bottles of it. Maybe I got an old batch at my local Sam’s store.

Blonde and Ugly Pug are fine.

  2. A pox upon Whitley for not sending Rahr and opting instead for a beer from another city. Jeff, you ought to call him and ask what in the hell he was thinking. What a slap in Rahr’s — and Fort Worth’s — face.

  3. Gents-
We finally got around to trying the Rahr and Sons beer that Judge Whitley so kindly sent, even though he did not have to do so as he won the bet. (go badger) (go pack go) We take our beer seriously up her in german land so here is our review. (my staff and campaign manager contributed)
Iron Thistle: very good scotch ale.
Storm Cloud: well balanced- refreshing IPA. popular.
Ugly Pug- kinda a light porter. in texas i could see how you may not want a real porter in the heat.
Rahrs Red- easy to drink. too easy.

by the way- we were amused? shocked? surprised? at the directions on the bottlecap. Seriously, you need to be told to use a bottle opener? never seen that before. ever. man up texas.
