This is an excellent example of storytelling. Fort Worth Star-Telegram writer Melody McDonald takes a frivolous slice-of-life tale with no discernible news value and makes it entertaining from start to finish (and probably wrote it in an afternoon). She even times her story so the reader can watch The Price Is Right tomorrow and find out what happens.

News reporters are obligated to tackle tough, hard-hitting, investigative stories, lay waste to sacred cows, and “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable,” as the old saying goes.

But I also enjoy a light, breezy, morale-boosting story as long as it’s well written like Melody’s.
