Sad news from the world of higher mathematics: Benoit Mandelbrot passed away last week at the age of 85. The Polish-born mathematician was best known as the father of fractal geometry, a field that was controversial when originally set forth in his 1977 book but is now widely accepted. His work has had repercussions in economics, geography, and biology, but one suspects he’ll be best remembered for his contributions to the art world.
