Fort Worth’s budget mire, which is forcing employees to take unpaid furloughs, hasn’t prevented the city from finding $4.5 million for Super Bowl 2011.

City department heads figure it’ll cost at least that much to prepare for the event. They huddled together on Thursday to make sure they have a solid game plan – if they maintain proper records, the city gets  reimbursed.

The North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee gets $31 million from the state to help pay for the big game. The committee spreads that green paper love to host cities Fort Worth, Arlington, Dallas, and Irving.

“The goal is for all of us to work together and work hard at keeping accurate records for what it takes to put on this event, and take the proper steps to get the reimbursement we’re due,” city spokesman Bill Begley said. “We have to be good stewards of the money we spend, and in finding as many ways as possible to make sure this investment pays off.”

Think city employees with extra time on their hands will be watching to make sure that investment pays off?

  1. Yeah, they also have no trouble finding over 10 million to bribe Radio Shack to keep leasing at the “campus” which they destroyed downtown’s public housing to build.
But we can’t keep our pools open for the kids.

  2. No surpises there, the Coucil and Mayor continue to rip off the citizens and city employees, can’t find the $3 million they promised to fund the Homeless Project but no problem finding money for Radio Shack or the Super Bowl.
