Few images from my childhood movie memories are freakier than the stage and TV actress Mabel King (pictured below) as Evilene in Sidney Lumet’s 1978 film version of the Broadway show The Wiz. BET will be screening that flick, which also featured Michael Jackson and Lena Horne, on June 6 at 1:30pm.
Coincidentally, Jubilee Theatre will present three performances (7pm May 27-29) of the Tony-winning Charlie Smalls-William F. Brown musical at O.D. Wyatt High School. Tickets are free, but reservations are required. And speaking of freaky: Jubilee’s adult and teen cast of The Wiz is being directed by the sublime Phyllis Cicero, whose wicked imagination is always on overdrive.
